What’s 2 plus 2?1

Four. Always. No debate.

Now answer this: “I have $2 today. If I sell my pet rock tomorrow for $2, I’ll have $4.”

True or false?

You just hesitated. Because you’re not really doing simple addition anymore. You’re asking:

  • Will I actually sell the pet rock?

  • Will the buyer show up?

  • Will $2 tomorrow equal $2 today?

  • Will I still have my original $2?

You just turned “2 + 2 = 4” into “2 + 2 = probably around 4, assuming several things go right.”

Welcome to probabilistic thinking. And whether you realize it or not, this is how you already navigate the world—and it’s exactly how AI works.

The Certainty We Want vs. The Uncertainty We Get

Humans crave deterministic answers. Yes or no. True or false. Will it work or won’t it?

But reality is fundamentally probabilistic.

This isn’t philosophy—it’s physics. Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle isn’t a measurement problem. It’s a fundamental feature of the universe. You cannot know both where a particle is and where it’s going with per…
